On Raping Porsches

Tonight I’m a bit sapped for energy, so it’s just a short summary of an argument I sometimes use.

We hear feminists decry anyone who thinks it might not be the best idea for some hot young thing to go to a fraternity party unaccompanied and intoxicated with her skirt halfway up her ass.  HOW DARE YOU DEFEND RAPE!!!  Here’s how I handle it.

Imagine you’ve got a brand new Porsche.  It’s yours.  You bought it.  It belongs to you.  Nobody has a right to steal it from you.

Now imagine you park that Porsche in a shady neighborhood.  You leave it to go off drinking somewhere, and you leave the keys in the ignition with the doors unlocked.

Under such a circumstance, your Porsche might get stolen (surprise, surprise).  Does anybody have the right to your Porsche?  No.  Should anybody have done anything more to your Porsche than admire it with their eyes?    No.  If they find the fuckholes who steal your Porsche, should they be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law?  Yes.  Did they violate your rights?  Indeed, they did.

BUT, you were a fucking dumbass.  I’m not saying you deserved to have your Porsche stolen, but you WERE asking for it.  Act like a total fool, and you WILL get burned.  Deserve’s got nothin’ to do with it.

Nevertheless, this does NOT give anyone the right to burn you.

We can ramble on about the merits (or lack thereof) of the concept of “rape culture” until we’re blue in the face.  We can argue for days on end about whether or not we can or should do anything about it.

But if we do in fact live in a “rape culture”, does it make much sense to inflame all the potential rapists in your midst?  Even if the guy who bangs you after you’ve passed out spread eagle in a short skirt on the pool table deserves to be hung, drawn, and quartered, should you make it quite so easy for him to rape you?  Maybe the Buffalo Jills latest dance routine made him think of you as nothing more than a piece of meat and that’s WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!  But if you live in such a fucking hostile society, as you work to change that society, shouldn’t you also behave as if you actually believe you’re under constant threat and maybe cover your ass? (so to speak)

Or maybe you’d rather just absolve yourself of any responsibility for anything whatsoever.

Independent women my ass.

As a 911 driver, I always garage park it. Just sayin’.

  2. Interesting article,
I just wrote a piece on how the changing definitions of key words silences criticism of dominant ideologies. The redefinition of powerful words such as rape is an insult to victims of actual injustice.
